Finding the perfect gift to crochet for the man in your life won’t be a challenge with this collection of easy mens beanie crochet patterns. There’s a hat here for every style and they’re quick to stitch up for a last-minute gift.
Why Crochet a Hat?
Hats and beanies are popular for stitchers of all skill levels. They’re often quick, easy, and fun to stitch, as well as being useful and a great gift idea.
If you’ve ever wondered the difference between a hat and a beanie, hats are a type of accessory that protects and covers the head, and beanies are a specific type of hat that is typically form fitting and does not have an extended brim to give coverage from the sun.
Crocheting a beanie can take as long a weekend but typically only takes a quick afternoon, or a few hours of stitching. The time it takes will depend on your skill level, the size and design of the hat, the weight of yarn you use, and your skill level.
Sizing a Crochet Hat for Men
Choosing the right size of any crochet project can be a little tricky, but that’s especially true when it comes to men’s beanie crochet patterns because heads can be a variety of sizes. Here are some tips to help you out.
How Big Should the Hat Be?
The width of the hat depends on the circumference of the recipient’s head. To measure this, take a measuring tape and measure the part of the head illustrated below. If your hat is meant to cover the ears, make sure you go over the ears when you measure.
Head Size Chart for Making Crochet Hats
Sometimes it isn’t possible for you to measure your recipient’s head, so here is a helpful head size chart that gives you the average head size at different ages. Adult men typically fall in the large adult category.
If you’re designing your own hat, make sure you make it a little smaller than the exact head measurement, because yarn stretches and this will allow for a snug but not too tight fit.
Speaking of designing your own, check out our Ultimate Crochet Stitch Library for 45 stitch patterns you can use on hats, blankets, sweaters, or any other project you like. It includes video tutorials to help speed your learning, and sample projects for you to use your new skills.
How to Make a Crochet Hat Slouchier
Some hats are made to be snug fitting, but if you want to make it a little slouchy you can add a few extra rows or rounds of the pattern stitch before you do any crown shaping. This works for hats worked from bottom up; for top down hats you would add extra rounds or rows after the shaping and before any ribbing or edge finishing.
If your hat is worked from side to side, the chain is the height of the hat, so you will need to add extra chains when you start to make it taller.
Materials Needed to Crochet a Hat
The main thing you need to crochet a men’s beanie, of course, is the yarn. Most of these patterns use worsted weight yarn, but you’ll want to choose a yarn in the weight the pattern calls for that feels good against your skin. Here are a few of our favorites, organized by weight:
(2) Sport Weight
(3) DK Weight
(4) Worsted Weight
(5) Bulky Weight
(6) Super Bulky Weight
It’s always a good idea to make a gauge swatch, even if you are using the same yarn the pattern calls for, to ensure that your hat will come out the size the designer intended.
Other supplies you will need to complete these men’s crochet beanie patterns include:
- a crochet hook in the size called for in the pattern, or that you need to get gauge
- a small pair of scissors for cutting yarn
- yarn needle (or tapestry needle) for weaving in ends, adding pompoms or sewing up the side of a hat worked fat
- stitch marker if working in the round, to note the end of the round
- purchased pom pom or pom pom maker (optional)
